About permission issues on DSM 7

Problem overview

Starting with version 7 of the DSM operating system, Synology refuses to grant root privileges to third-party packages, including the Arx One Backup agent, officially for security reasons.
root access is required by the backup agent in order to have full access to files to be backed up and restored.

Possible solutions

There are two options:

  • Solution 1: Elevate the privileges of the backup agent to restore the same behavior as on DSM 6.
  • Solution 2: Modify access rights on shared folders so that the backup agent can access them without privilege elevation.

Solution 1: Elevating the backup agent privileges

This solution avoids the need for any further modifications later.

Migration from DSM 6 to 7 after installing the backup agent

If the Arx One Backup agent (version ⩾ 9.1) was installed on DSM 6 before upgrading to DSM 7, the good news is that you have nothing to do — the migration was anticipated.

Solution 2: Adding permissions on shared folders to be backed up

This solution provides better compliance with Synology requirements.
